Emergency temporary heating for an operational day nursery

Urgent help needed - temporary LPG boiler required by Monday, 9am.

Steven Gale
When heating systems fail in a live nursery environment, the implications extend beyond comfort. Maintaining safe conditions, continuity of care and regulatory compliance becomes critical, and time is rarely on your side.

This case study outlines how a bespoke temporary heating solution was delivered to support an operational day nursery following an unexpected system failure, without disrupting day-to-day activities.

The situation

An unexpected failure in the existing heating system left the nursery at risk of losing heating during normal operating hours.

With children and staff on site daily, maintaining a safe and comfortable internal environment was essential, and any prolonged downtime would have had immediate operational and regulatory consequences.

The complication

Nursery environments present specific challenges.

The system needed to be installed quickly, operate reliably, and integrate safely with the existing site — all while minimising disruption, noise and visual impact.

Access constraints, safeguarding considerations and the need for ongoing operational continuity meant that a standard, off-the-shelf approach would not have been appropriate.

The thinking

Rather than focusing solely on output capacity, the priority was to design a temporary heating system that would operate quietly, reliably and unobtrusively within a sensitive, occupied environment.

System configuration, positioning and redundancy were carefully considered to ensure stable performance, while allowing the nursery to continue operating as normal throughout the hire period.

Responsibility for system performance, installation and ongoing support was retained throughout, removing the need for the client to coordinate multiple suppliers under pressure.

The outcome

Within 72 hours of first contact, a compliant temporary heating system was installed and commissioned with minimal disruption to the nursery’s daily routine.

Safe internal conditions were maintained, allowing the nursery to remain fully operational while longer-term arrangements were made.

The temporary system continued to perform reliably for the duration of the hire, providing reassurance and continuity in a situation where failure was not an option.
